Coach
Craig has been
a competitive runner for 22 years, and a
coach for more than a decade. He was born
with both feet twisted 90 degree to the left, which was
only partially fixed by braces he wore as an infant.
This left him with poor sprint speed, terrible
flexibility, and a rather unusual running form that
remains to this day. However, he proved to be
a talented distance runner, known primarily for his
gutsy racing style. Now a veteran
of more than 500 races from 400 meters to
the marathon, the 10K is his favorite distance,
where he holds a 29:57 road PR.
Craig
grew up in Southern California, but now lives with his
wife and two kids in Eugene, Oregon. He still
chases PR's, while maintaining the www.RunningCoaches.com
and www.FasterRunning.com
web sites.

Coach
Craig has
worked with some of the top coaches in the
country, and has also been successful
as a self-coached runner. He has
coached runners ranging from first-timers
to 14 minute 5K runners, ranging from
high school age to late sixties.
Coach Craig believes
strongly that there needs to been a good fit between
the coach and the runner. Also, it is critical
that the training program match the individual, as there
is no one magic formula that works for everyone. The
most important key to success is consistency, which
can only be achieved when a runner enjoys the training.
To make this work, Craig evaluates each runner's
personal style and preferences, and then tailors a program
to match. This sometimes means using proven,
although somewhat unconventional, training techniques
when that is the best fit for the individual. Craig
also believes that racing is a mental and physical skill
that must be learned and practiced, so this is reflected
in the training and racing schedules, as well as his
communications with the runners prior to competitions.
Finally, Craig believes
that coaching is also teaching. He makes an effort
in his coaching to pass along the skills and knowledge
to his runners. This allows the athlete to understand
how and why to train, and ultimately become self coached
or coach other runners if desired.
